Why choose cremation rather than burial?
- Burial is now considerably more expensive than cremation.
- Cemeteries and Burial Grounds, once full, tend to become neglected.
- Our gardens and grounds are maintained to a high standard.
- Over 70% of the UK deceased are cremated.
Do I have to have a religious funeral?
- A religious service or a non religious ceremony can be held in the chapels at Barham Crematorium and Barham Crematorium.
- Most faiths accept cremation. Exceptions include Orthodox Jews and Muslims.
- It is not necessary to have a minister to conduct your funeral. Any person may conduct the funeral.
What happens on the day of the funeral at the crematorium?
- Mourners gather at the entrance of the chapel, or wait in the waiting room, for the hearse to arrive. The coffin is carried into the chapel followed by the close family. The funeral director will direct the other mourners into the chapel.
- Funerals are booked at Forty minute intervals. Extended funerals of 80 or 120 minutes are available and can be arranged by your funeral director. Forty minutes is normally an adequate time to complete a dignified and compassionate funeral to include entry and exit from the chapel, music, eulogies, prayers and committal.
- After the funeral mourners will be led to the floral tribute area to view the tributes and speak to the deceased's family.
What happens to the ashes?
- Ashes are available the day after the funeral.
- Ashes can be strewn in our grounds or taken away by the applicant .
- The strewing of ashes may be witnessed by the family of the deceased.

Our Aims
- To make sure every funeral service is regarded as a major event and receives the same priority as if it was for a member of one's own family or a civic or national dignitary.
- To provide improved facilities for the public, funeral directors, clergy and staff. We have made a substantial investment to provide high quality facilities but it is important that we maintain them well so that the intended users get the benefit.
- To provide a well maintained, clean and comforting environment for mourners, clergy, funeral directors and staff, both within and outside the building. This includes landscaping to the grounds to ensure that a natural and beautiful setting is provided throughout the year.
- Flexibility and adaptability. We exist for the benefit of the public and not the reverse.
- Providing for different community groups to meet their needs. The differences between communities are something which we encourage as it displays our ability to be flexible and to create a funeral ceremony that people want.
- Innovation - We want to anticipate people's needs and be open minded about what services we should provide. People's expectations are always changing and we must strive to keep up with, if not ahead of their demands. If we don't meet these aims, please let us know. Our complaints' procedure is shown on the YOUR FEEDBACK page.
Barham Crematorium has established a code of practice for all of the services we perform. This is designed to help maintain our standards and to allow bereaved families to evaluate the level of care shown by our staff. We recognise that this is often difficult as people may be organising a funeral for the first time and may not be aware of what to expect. We hope this document will help you.
A Cremation Service
- Each body is cremated with the coffin, or shroud, within 24 hours of the funeral service.
- Each body is cremated individually. All the cremated remains are collected for each individual and reduced to ash.
- The cremated remains/ashes are available for collection by the applicant. (the person who arranged the cremation service, normally a close relative) or Funeral Director the next working day after the funeral, and on the same day in certain cases (this would necessarily mean an early morning service).
- Anyone can choose to inspect the crematory (where the cremation takes place) upon application to the manager.
- Information on what arrangements can be made for the dispersal of the ashes, or their safe storage at the Crematorium, will be sent to all applicants within two weeks of the funeral.
- A wide range of memorial choices will be provided within our gardens and Chapel of Remembrance as well as for supply to your home. A trained member of staff is available to advise you on these matters.
- Provision will be made to ensure that no funeral is delayed beyond three working days of the requested date. In the extreme circumstances that no times are available during this period then the funeral may be arranged at the weekend or after 5pm on a weekday at no further cost. Barham Crematorium abides by the FBCA's (Federation of British Cremation Authorities) code of conduct and is a member of the Charter for the Bereaved.
